Leamington Victory MCC
Affiliated to the ﹙Midland Centre﹚ of the Auto‑Cycle Union (ACU) — the British governing body for off-road motorcycle sport. Auto-Cycle Union Ltd
The club exists to promote off-road motorcycle sport, with its principal disciplines being trials and grasstrack events.
Our Origins
Founded in the autumn of 1945, the club emerged from local enthusiasm for reviving motorcycle competition after six long years of war. Some of the founding members had belonged to the pre-war Leamington & District MCC, but this new entity was built as a fresh start, hence the new name.
Within a few months a regular programme of competitive and social events was underway. Early meetings were held in local pub rooms — starting at The Fox & Vivian, and later more regularly at the Windmill Inn in Tachbrook Road.
Early Events & Expansion
Although the initial focus was entirely on trials, a strong core of grasstrack supporters soon emerged. In the first few years, grasstrack meetings were held at venues including Victoria Park in Leamington and Abbey Fields in Kenilworth — both run in aid of charity.
Through the 1950s the club maintained a vigorous sporting calendar, staging up to ten trials and at least two race meetings annually.
Club Premises and Later Developments
In 1960 the Club was able to purchase its own premises at Bishop’s Tachbrook, which became the social hub for members. As running costs escalated in later decades, the club sold the clubhouse in 1987 and instead sought to secure its own land for holding events. In 2004 the club purchased a 23-acre field at Ashorne, near Warwick, which has hosted many successful events since.
Long-standing Traditions and Land-Links
Over the decades the club has had strong links with the Wood Farm, Ufton, Warwickshire. With very few exceptions we ran our “Boxing Day Trial” on Ufton Hill each December (until the arrival of HS2 construction made the venue unusable in 2022) and it was a regular location for grasstrack meetings for many years.
Why Our Club Matters
-
Being affiliated to the ACU places us within the formal structure of British motorcycle sport — the ACU is the recognised governing body for motorcycle sport in Great Britain and sets rules, safety standards and licensing. Auto-Cycle Union Ltd
-
Our long history (over 75 years) provides continuity, heritage and a sense of community for enthusiasts of trials and grasstrack.
-
A standing venue (our Ashorne field) gives us a home base for organizing events and ensures stability for members and spectators alike.
-
Our strong land-links (e.g., Ufton, Wood Farm) and charitable early events reflect a community-minded spirit.
What We Do – Trials & Grasstrack
-
Trials: These events test riders’ skill over rough terrain, steep slopes and obstacles — emphasising control rather than outright speed.
-
Grasstrack: Typically held on flat, grassy fields, these races are more speed-oriented, often with a local crowd and community atmosphere.
We aim to provide a mixture of competition and social activity, embracing members of differing skill levels.
Looking Forward
As we move beyond our 80th year, the club continues to focus on:
-
Ensuring safe, well-run events that comply with ACU rules and best practice.
-
Attracting new riders and younger members to ensure the sport’s future.
-
Maintaining and improving our venue at Ashorne, and exploring possible additional sites as opportunities arise.
-
Preserving our traditions while adapting to changing times (land availability, insurance, environmental factors).
